Should You Use Grass Carp For Aquatic Weed Control?

Controlling the plant life in a pond, or in any other body of water is extremely critical. Why you ask? Well, since for whatever reason, you have chosen that you do not want it there. No matter if those plants have generated some sort of hindrance for swimming children, or have just simply stopped up the engine on your favorite motorboat, you want them to be gone, and there are several ways of doing it.

Naturally you can use chemical substances, plastic lining, freezing, manual pulling, or perhaps even dye, but all of those are fairly inconvenient, and there’s no promise that your pond, or even the fish, would ever be anywhere near what it was following these actions. Around 1963, a new fish was placed in the United States ecological, and that fish was called the Grass Carp. This fish was deliberately introduced into our ecosystem for one purpose of eradicating  aquatic plant life, and so far it has lived up to it’s reputation. Within the US, the Grass Carp is commonly called the White Amur, presumably because of the fact that the word Carp has negative interpretations here in the United States., and the name “Amur” is a reference to the river which the fish comes from, a river which borders China and Russia.

The Grass Carp, is what’s known as an invasive species, meaning that it will multiply and take over the ecosystem which it is placed in (similar to humans), however science has progressed a long way, and while it required some time, and a lot of gene manipulation, sterilizing a Grass Carp finally became standard all over the world so that it’s integration doesn’t hurt or eradicate the local ecology.

An additional detail to note, is that the Grass Carp does not consume every kind of grass, naturally it enjoys plants, and would consume most of it, however just like with human being, there’s things that it enjoys over others. A couple of the items that the Grass Carp will enjoy, are:

Coontail
Spikerush
Smartweed
Bladderwort
Bulrush
Water hyssop
Eelgrass

There’s many others, and a visit to a library, an Internet search, or a consultation with an expert would quickly reveal the things a grass carp would consume.

When bought in large amounts, Grass Carp is fairly cheap, ranging from about $10-20 for each fish, and that is very reasonable when you consider how long it’ll last; surviving for about 10-11 years.

In certain states, you will need to acquire a license prior to putting Grass Carp into any body of water, even if it is your water. To find out if that’s necessary, talk to the game warden in your area, or simply examine the laws of the state, since this info is readily accessible to any person that needs it.

As you can see, Grass Carp are a great alternate means from using chemical compounds, or lining the pond with plastic, since not just are these great for ridding you of unwanted plant life, you should also remember that it’s a symbiotic relationship, you provide something that they want, and then they provide their services to you, preventing you from having to do this yourself. Overall, this is a great exchange.
