That soy protein is almost always described as safe and natural by the companies using it. But there’s a dirty little secret the soy product industry doesn’t want you to know: Much of the natural soy protein used in foods today is bathed in a toxic, explosive chemical solvent known as hexane. When the soy protein is contacted with the flavor-and-odor-improving agent in aqueous dispersion, it is precipitated, if not already in that soy protein powder form. Accordingly, the previously described precipitation and isolation need not be carried out prior to contacting in the flavor-and-odor-improving step. This type of soy protein is prepared from defatted soybeans by removing the water-soluble carbohydrates. Soy protein concentrates take on the flavor of the foods they enhance and tend to improve the overall quality because they retain moisture and will hold flavor through multiple cooking processes.

Most barcode scanners are now actual terminals running Windows Mobile or something similar. That opens a whole other can of worms since much more complex mobile barcode scanner programming of the scanner itself and much more complex infrastructures are required.
